The Unseen Cause Preventing Fat Loss & The Easy Fix

Toxins and Our Water and Weight Loss Blog

Many of us are exploring the path to health find unexpected roadblocks -- especially when it comes to reaching our goal weight.

One surprisingly common yet often overlooked culprit may the water you drink -- even purified water.

It's not just the water you're drinking at home, it's ALL the water you consume in:

  • bottled water
  • coffee drinks
  • tea drinks
  • sparkling water
  • electrolyte drinks
  • sodas, even natural sodas
  • any bottled beverage

We absolutely must consider the quality of our all the water we drink, because it can impact our gut health in profound ways, leading to conditions such as leaky gut and in turn difficulty with weight loss.

What is Leaky Gut?

A leaky gut occurs when the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged, allowing toxins, undigested food particles, and bacteria to "leak" through the intestines and flood into the bloodstream.

This can set off a cascade of health issues, from inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), hormone imbalances to immune dysfunction – and yes, even obesity.

The Ripple Effect of Leaky Gut on Stubborn Weight Gain

But how does a leaky gut tie into weight gain?

The connection is more straightforward than you might think. A gut that's out of balance can become a breeding ground for inflammation and that can make it difficult lose excess weight.

In addition, an array of toxins, which we term 'obesogens,' leak through the intestinal lining and can lead to stubborn weight gain.

These harmful agents interfere with our metabolism and are stored in the fat cells of our bodies, making it challenging to shed pounds, despite our best efforts with diet and exercise.

If leaky gut persists long enough, it can lead to malabsorption, or difficulty absorbing nutrients from your food. In turn, this leads to difficulty in building muscle even with resistance training.

It's clear: to truly thrive, we must go further upstream and address overlooked root causes so we can restore harmony within our gut and make it easier for our bodies to safely burn fat.

Why the 4R Approach to Gut Healing Doesn't Work As Well Anymore

For years health professionals have used 4R approach to heal the gut. This includes removing triggers, replacing inflammatory foods, re-inoculating with probiotics, and repairing damage to the lining of the gut.

This is a good system for dealing with leaky gut, yet increasingly relief is temporary. Many people cannot re-introduce trigger foods such as gluten or dairy without a relapse of symptoms.

Why?

Because the focus is on removing inflammatory trigger foods, but often fails to address other sources of toxins that are disrupting the gut. We must address hidden toxins coming from our air, food, AND water supply at once.

We need to be looking at all the sources of water we drink and address deficiencies in water filtration otherwise we can get stuck in a cycle that keeps up eating fewer and fewer foods and wondering why we're not able to lose weight.

The good news is that this is one of the easiest things to fix, so stay with me and keep reading to understand why most water purification systems are coming up short and then we'll talk solutions.

How "Pure" is Your  Purified Water?

We've placed faith in filters like reverse osmosis, yet they're not the impenetrable shield we hoped for. I'll explain more about that shortly.

Our municipal city water can contain high levels of arsenic, nitrates, perchlorates, chloroform, trihalomethanes, Haloacetic acids, and numerous other carcinogens that exceed what's considered safe.

And depending on where you live, you might also be sipping on radioactive elements like radium or uranium – toxic elements that can disrupt thyroid function and make weight loss even more difficult.

Even worse, not all filter systems can fully eliminate them.

Reverse Osmosis Warning

How many contaminants are you ok drinking?

First, You Need to Know What's in Your Water

I highly recommend looking up your municipal water supply. EWG offers a free Tap Water Database that you can access at https://www.ewg.org/tapwater/

Be aware that the last time this data was updated was in 2021 may not accurately reflect what is in your water today. However, at least it gives you an idea of what you're dealing with.

For example, in Eagle, Idaho where I live there are 8 contaminants in the municipal water supply and 5 water contaminants above safe levels including the radioactive elements Uranium and Radium.

In Las Vegas, where Elie lives, the municipal water system has 32 total contaminants with 15 are above the safe limit, including Uranium.

The Filter Fallacy

Water purification is essential in today's world have any kind of filter is important. But, when it comes to weight loss and gut issues not any filter will do.

The giant secret of the water filtration business is that membranes and carbon filters are not 100% effective at removing toxins during the entire lifetime of the filter.

These membranes and filters get clogged and for a family of four, it doesn't take long for this to happen-- within a month you're going to see a significant drop of contaminant removal.

With each gallon purified, the filter's efficacy can plummet. It may start at 99% contaminant removal, but after filtering a mere 100 gallons it plummets to 75-80% leaving you with a cocktail of toxins that simple isn't acceptable.

Toxins remaining in filtered water can be source of gut disruption for people who drink it.

If you're shocked by this fact, you are not alone. The effectiveness of most reverse osmosis water filtration systems is generally not disclosed and most people assume that they're drinking pure water all the time even when they're not.

But, don't worry... there is a simple and affordable solution.

Let's Not Forget About the Water in Your Beverages

Another hidden source of gut disrupting toxins is our beverages that we buy. From the coffee shop's brew to bottled water to the soda fountain, we lack control over the water used.

Even if you diligently filter your home drinking water, you might consume unfiltered contaminants elsewhere, like fluoride in a convenience-store cold brew that was sourced from fluoridated municipal water.

According to EWG, they found 37 different contaminants in the top 10 most popular bottled waters. Makes you think twice before drinking a bottled water doesn't it?

Bottom Line... Contaminants in Your Drinking Water, Even Purified Water, Could be Disrupting Your Gut and Sabotage Your Weight Loss Efforts.

It's time to bring this narrative full circle: Chemicals from our drinking water and other beverages must be addressed if we are to lessen our toxic load, rejuvenate our gut microbiome, and boost our metabolic function. That in turn will give your weight loss efforts a real boost.

If you're struggling with stubborn weight gain, gut issues, or tried the 4Rs and it didn't work for you, It's time to address your water.
